The Neptune Interconnection
Now in service the new high-voltage transmission link between New Jersey and
Long Island, New York.
At the end of June 2007, and one month ahead of schedule, Prysmian handed over the Neptune,
a new high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission link between Sayreville, New Jersey, and Long
Island, New York.

After a successful trial period the Neptune interconnection is now in
service, just in time to face the summer period. The Neptune cable system provides Long Island with
the opportunity to significantly diversify its energy resource options with the possibility of
purchasing power from one of the most diverse and competitively-priced power transmission
organization in the United States, called "PJM", which controls electricity flows in all or parts
of Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio,
Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia and contains more
than 100,000 MW of diversified and relatively low-cost power generation.
That's why, thanks to the Neptune, LIPA (Long Island Power Authority) is now
able to acquire lower cost energy on time for the peak summer season, when the demand for
electricity is higher, thus meeting the needs of about 600,000 average-sized homes in a
cost-effective and sustainable way.
The Neptune Regional Transmission System consists of a 65 mile electric transmission line
from Sayreville, New Jersey to Nassau County on Long Island via undersea and underground cables.
The project included the manufacturing, transport, installation and commissioning of a
660-MW (500 kV) High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) submarine turn-key cable system that
interconnects power generation resources in New Jersey to electricity consumers in Long Island,
along a distance of 65 miles (more than 100 km). The largest portion of the route – more than 50
miles - runs underwater across the Atlantic Ocean out of the New York Harbor area; 14 miles run
underground (either direct buried or in conduit) in the existing right-of-way of the Wantagh State
Parkway.
Prysmian Power Cables and Systems USA LLC, in consortium with Siemens Power Transmission and
Distribution Inc. USA, provided the engineering, procurement, and construction services for
manufacturing and installation of the cable, construction of the converter stations and
installation of station components. |
