Sirocco HD cables are available in fibre counts from 96 to 552 and conform to international standards for optical and mechanical performance. Prysmian PicoTube technology makes cables up to 20% smaller than previous versions. This makes it possible to install more fibres into congested duct space and enable the use of smaller ducts for new installations, resulting in lower installation costs and the use of less raw materials. In turn, this benefits for both the total cost of network deployment and the environmental footprint.
“We faced a number of challenges during development. One of the biggest challenges was being able to make the cable tubes so small without compromising on usability and mechanical and optical performance. The skills and experience of our R&D teams in Slatina and Bishopstoke made this possible. We’ve developed some interesting new learnings and best practices that we can leverage going forward. All of the customers that we have shown the cables have been astonished: ‘How did we manage to make them so small?’ Usually, 288f is the maximum available for these micro duct cables compatible with standard duct sizes of up to 10mm. Now we can achieve up to 552 fibres.”
“Air blowing cable has been around for a long time and the advantages are well established. Blowing in a cable rather than pulling it in allow longer installation distances to be reached, Installation distance is less dependent on bends and undulations in the duct, forces exerted on the cable are lower, using a winch rope is avoided and the equipment is needed only at one end of the duct route. With Sirocco, we can combine all of these advantages with very high fibre densities. Effectively, we are offering a scalable solution that’s high-density, physically compact, and easily deployable for a future-fit solution, thus meeting the evolving needs of the market for years to come.”
