Innovation in Action: Prysmian’s Transmission Business Unit Sets New Standards for Cable Jointing

We’re proud to share a major milestone in our journey towards operational excellence and technological leadership. At our Prysmian laboratory in Quattordio, Italy, immersive technology is transforming how we train jointers, the skilled professionals who ensure seamless cable connections across our global power grids.

Cable jointing is a critical task that demands precision, experience, and deep technical knowledge. That’s why our training programs are designed to be rigorous, hands-on, and now—thanks to Virtual Reality and 3D procedures—more intuitive and accessible. Our jointers-in-training follow a two-year path that blends classroom learning with real-world practice. These immersive tools allow trainees to visualize installations in full scale, rehearse procedures remotely, and even receive real-time expert support through augmented reality.

The benefits of this immersive technology are:

  • Improved joint quality
  • Faster alignment between R&D, NWC, and training teams
  • Increased autonomy and confidence in the field
  • Scalable training that reaches jointers worldwide

These technologies are now being applied across a wide range of operations—from cable pulling and site preparation to offshore installations—ensuring teams are better prepared for real-world challenges.

This milestone was conceived and developed by Transmission Jointing and Land Installation Department at Prysmian - Luca Viganò, Jointing and land installation services Director, Roberto Riolo, Digital Innovation and Installation Compliance manager and Roberto Riva, Jointing Standard Engineer- and with the collaboration of Quattordio Traning School, Fulvio Loro, Training School Manager, and Danka Sicchiero, Jointing Training School specialist. Their vision and expertise have been instrumental in shaping a training model that not only meets today’s demands but also anticipates tomorrow’s challenges.
