Prysmian has been awarded the gold prize at the IPMA (International Project Management Association) Global Project Excellence Awards 2024 for Large- & Mega-Sized Projects in the Energy Projects category during a ceremony who took place on 29th November in Cape Town (South Africa). This recognition is for Viking Link Project, the world's longest onshore and offshore HVDC interconnector, connecting the UK and Denmark.
Prysmian's world record Viking Link project secures the gold prize at IPMA: celebrating excellence in energy projects
Viking Link was awarded in August 2019 by National Grid and Energinet. The contract included the turn-key design, manufacture and installation covering all the 1,250 km of cables for the submarine route and approximately 135 km of land cables on the UK side. In September 2023, Prysmian has successfully announced the completion of the installation and HV testing activities of its 1,400 km of submarine and land power cables. Viking Link will enable the exchange of clean energy between the two countries, supporting their journey to net zero and reducing the cost of electricity in the UK and providing additional system reliability.
Founded in 1965, IPMA is a federation of more than 75 Member Associations that every year organizes an international competition to promote excellence and recognize teams that display and can prove great achievements in project and program management. Project managers, project teams and organizations from all over the world are called on stage to acknowledge their project management successes. This is the second time that Prysmian has participated in this prestigious competition. Five years ago, with the CWA 50Hz project, Prysmian secured the third place and a bronze award in the same highest category of Mega Projects. Over the past few years, the competition has become increasingly fierce, with more global contenders from the energy sector.
“Viking Link has been a long time in the making. For years, we have been planning and developing our skills and processes in project management. And Viking Link has incorporated all the lessons learned from our first endeavor (CWA 50Hz)”
Riccardo Fabbri
Head of Project and Contract Management
