Prysmian has concluded 2024 with significant achievements in sustainability, supported by its culture of innovation and its focus on making a positive impact on people and the planet. The achievements set the basis for Prysmian’s sustainability focus in the “Accelerating Growth” strategy, which was communicated in March in New York City. The new strategy includes reaching 55% of revenues from sustainable solutions by 2028, up from 43% in 2024.

In the document “2024 Sustainability Highlights”, now available for download, Prysmian shares its achievements in 2024, together with its vision for up to 2028 and beyond.

Decarbonisation – innovation and partnership

  • Major reductions achieved in 2024 vs. the 2019 baseline
  • Net Zero by 2035 – fifteen years in advance of the previous target

Prysmian made significant progress in 2024, following the positive results achieved each year compared to the 2019 baseline. In 2024, it achieved a 37% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions (market-based), and a 54% reduction in Scope 3 GHG emissions. This achievement was possible through dedicated commitment to its own operations, as well as working together with partners to drive down overall emissions across the value chain.

Actions introduced by Prysmian include initiatives to improve energy efficiency in factories and production processes, leading to a 3% reduction in energy consumption compared to 2023.

Prysmian has installed photovoltaic systems in 8 plants to support the self-sufficiency of its operations, and has also made significant progress in terms of products, integrating the use of recycled polyethylene in cable sheathing and increasing the use of green aluminium in overhead line conductors.

2024 also saw major product innovations and the portfolio of sustainable solutions was expanded. These include E3X technology, which reduces cable energy losses and improves reliability, and the launch of E Path, Prysmian’s certification for environmentally friendly solutions.

Thanks to these achievements and its commitment to innovation, Prysmian has advanced its net zero target by fifteen years to 2035, accelerating its decarbonization path throughout its value chain.

Generating a positive impact on nature and ecosystems

  • New Net Gain target is an industry first
  • Enhanced disclosure to boost transparency for all stakeholders

Prysmian is among the first companies to set a Net Gain biodiversity target, which it will seek to achieve by 2035. This will be enabled by the integration of ecosystem resilience and biodiversity into its operations and projects, including the analysis of potential consequences for habitats, risks and opportunities, and the use of the most reliable tools on the market, such as the WWF Biodiversity Risk Filter. The results of Prysmian’s initial analysis has revealed that 18% of its production sites are potentially exposed to biodiversity-linked factors. The next due diligence steps will therefore be specially adapted to these sites. In large installation projects, Prysmian commits not only to minimise the environmental impact of its activities but take action to improve the territories in which it operates, using advanced technologies – such as acoustic devices and artificial intelligence systems – to monitor and protect marine fauna and its habitats.

Starting from 2025, Prysmian has adopted the TNFD (Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures) guidelines, a significant boost to overall transparency on nature and biodiversity topics for all stakeholders.

At the centre of the circular economy

  • Extended use of recycled material and reduced consumption of virgin resources

Prysmian has long been committed to the principles of the circular economy, innovating the way it uses resources and reducing waste. This means rethinking the entire life cycle of the product, from the use of recycled materials and responsible waste management through to the design of more sustainable solutions. Prysmian continually invests in innovation to develop cables and components with a lower environmental impact. In collaboration with its suppliers and customers, Prysmian strives to use recyclable raw materials where possible to reduce the consumption of virgin resources and expand the use of industrial waste.

In 2024, Prysmian strengthened its procurement processes for wooden drums and packaging materials, giving preference to recycled, low environmental impact material, as well as monitoring their life cycle. This enabled the reuse of 53% of cable drums, of which 75% are wooden.

The Group is also integrating the life cycle assessment approach using tools such as the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) and the Product Carbon Footprint, which measures the product’s impact in terms of GHG emissions. Prysmian launched this project in pilot countries such as France, Italy, Spain, and the Nordics, with the hope to expand it globally by the end of 2025.

A shared ownership for the future

  • Over 50% of employees as shareholders by 2028

Prysmian has set the goal of 50% of its employees to be shareholders by 2028, a key aspect of the ownership culture that underlines the company’s success.

These commitments are tied to concrete initiatives to support our employees and the role they play in society, in line with our leadership position. For example, Prysmian became a founding member of the “PARI” Association against gender-based violence.

At the heart of a global supply chain

  • 500 suppliers examined through desk & risk analysis in 2024
  • Prysmian – which purchases circa 3% of global copper – joins the Copper Mark initiative to make a concrete impact for the entire supply chain

Prysmian’s supply chain plays a key role in the global value chains of the energy and digital sectors. Through due diligence, engagement programmes and collaboration with suppliers, Prysmian aims to integrate ESG criteria at all stages of the procurement cycle. It has strengthened its commitment with 44 audits performed since 2017 and 500 suppliers examined through desk & risk analysis in 2024 alone. In 2024, Prysmian joined the Copper Mark initiative – a common framework aimed at promoting best practices across the copper value chain – and joined engagement activities with suppliers and stakeholders to promote sustainable practices throughout the entire supply chain. Looking ahead, during 2025, Prysmian aims to increase the number of sustainability audits and to continue monitoring suppliers.

Active part of the community

  • Extending clean energy & digital access for millions of households worldwide
  • Prysmian’s Women in STEM programme breaking down barriers in employment and education

Prysmian’s core business is to support the energy transition and the digital transformation of society. As a global leader, as of 2024 the Company has enabled 78.4 million households to access sustainable energy, well on track to reach the target of 110 million by 2025. In addition, Prysmian has enabled 17.1 million households to have fast digital access, surpassing the 15 million target set for 2025.

In 2024, Prysmian continued to promote social and economic development in the local communities in which it operates by integrating this commitment into its project strategy, with important initiatives such as those in the UK where, as part of the NeuConnect project, the Company has cooperated in the education of local schoolchildren. In the education space, other activities include seminars, factory visits and specific programmes such as those with the Universities of Caserta and Bari, where engineering and chemistry students receive technical training. In addition, Prysmian’s Women in STEM programme supports young women interested in careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, promoting inclusiveness and safety in the field.
