Leonardo da Vinci, the Best Support Vessel of the year

Prysmian Group is thrilled that our Leonardo da Vinci vessel has been picked as Best Support Vessel of the Year by readers of Offshore Wind Journal. We designed the Leonardo da Vinci to be the best in the industry. Our peers agreed, saying it has set an industry benchmark through innovative design and efficient operation.
The record-setting Leonardi da Vinci was a massive project for Prysmian Group, taking nearly two years to build. It joined an already cutting-edge fleet composed of three vessels - Giulio Verne, Cable Enterprise and Ulisse. The Leonardo da Vinci is equipped with two rotating platforms of 7,000 and 10,000 tons, granting the highest carousel capacity in the market. The vessel is designed and equipped to carry out undersea power cable installations of up to 3,000 metres in depth also thanks to next-generation cable technology with synthetic armour which is 30% lighter than steel.

Our team made sure the Leonardo da Vinci complied with the latest sustainability standards, so it is powered by hybrid engines. We installed a Wärtsilä NOx Reducer System that shrinks the emissions of nitrogen oxide by 85%, making the Leonardo da Vinci compliant with the latest IMO Tier III standard. Last but not least, it accommodates a crew of 120 offering comfort, ample working spaces and recreational areas for all personnel, including fully equipped gym, auditorium, game room, dayroom and officers’ lounge.
“This vessel represents a key strategic asset for our Group and, thanks to its versatility, will support us in several cable installation projects, strengthening our leadership in the interconnection and offshore wind farm markets,” said Hakan Ozmen, EVP Project BU.

The vessel became operative last July being engaged, as first mission, in the installation of the second campaign of the Viking Link submarine cable connection between the UK and Denmark, the world’s longest power interconnection. In sequence afterwards it was involved in other important operations such as the completion works in proximity of the platform for Saint Nazaire offshore wind farm in France and the laying of the submarine power cable interconnection between the Spanish islands Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, currently underway.
We will make sure to give you an update at the official launching ceremony during the second quarter of 2022, to show off the Leonardo da Vinci’s superior performances and cable installation capabilities. David Worthington, UK and North Europe Business Management Director, accepted the award at the annual OSJ gala dinner in London on November 17. Congratulations to everyone who took part in this adventure!
