Prysmian wins first UK - Denmark submarine connection

Viking Link is a 1400 MW high voltage direct current (HVDC) electricity link between the British and Danish transmission systems. Commissioning is scheduled for late 2023. It will connect Bicker Fen substation in Lincolnshire, Great Britain and the Revsing substation in South Jutland, Denmark.

The project involves construction of a converter station in each country, installation of submarine and underground cables between converter stations, and underground cables between converter stations and substations.

Viking Link will be approximately 760 km long and will allow electricity to be exchanged between Great Britain and Denmark passing through UK, Dutch, German and Danish waters, using single-core, mass-impregnated paper-insulated cables. This interconnector will enable the more effective use of renewable energy, access to sustainable electricity generation and improved security of electricity supplies.

Prysmian Group has been awarded a contract for Viking Link from National Grid Viking Link Limited and Energinet. The scope includes turnkey design, manufacture and installation of the world’s longest interconnector. Project scope includes the entire 1,250 km of cabling for the submarine route and all of the approximately 135 km of land cables on the UK side. The value of the project is close to €700 million.

The High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) interconnector will operate at ± 525 kV DC. The aim is to increase access to renewable and sustainable energy sources to more than 1.4 million households, reduce the cost of electricity in the UK and increase system reliability.

All cables will be manufactured at Group’s centre of excellence in Arco Felice (Italy). Offshore cable operations will be performed using Prysmian’s new €170 million cutting-edge installation vessel, the most advanced on the market.
