Beach Sweep Success: Eastern Green Link 1 Tackles Plastic Pollution for World Environment Day!

North Berwick, Scotland – On 5 June, in a fantastic display of community spirit, 13 dedicated volunteers from the Eastern Green Link 1 project teams descended upon the beautiful beaches of North Berwick for a litter pick to celebrate World Environment Day! Organised in support of the Scottish Seabird Centre, the event aimed to tackle plastic pollution.

The beaches were cleaned by 10 volunteers from Prysmian and its supply chain (Brown and May Marine, and Glenturas), alongside three others from Scottish Power Energy Network and Metlen.

In just two hours, the volunteers collected nine bags of rubbish, dedicating a grand total of 26 hours of volunteering (20 hours from Prysmian and its supply chain) to clean up the shoreline. While the usual suspects of plastic bottles and wrappers were collected, other finds included a plastic scrubbing brush, mysterious rubber tubing, and a plastic camera lens cap!

“It was brilliant to see so many people come together to make a real difference to the local area for World Environment Day. Every piece of plastic we removed helps protect our amazing marine life and keeps our beaches beautiful! This fun and impactful event proves that when we work together, we can make a real difference in beating plastic pollution and keeping our natural environment pristine. A huge thank you to all the volunteers who made the North Berwick litter pick a success!”

Project Director at Prysmian

Eastern Green Link 1 will provide long-term positive change and benefits to local area for many years into the future and Prysmian is investing in social value activity throughout the construction of the project, to give back to the communities affected by the works.

This event follows a similar beach clean in Horden, County Durham on 30 May, in support of the Durham Wildlife Trust. One Prysmian volunteered two hours on the day.

Focus on the project

Eastern Green Link 1 (EGL1) will form a vital electricity transmission link between Torness in East Lothian, Scotland and Hawthorn Pit in County Durham, England and is the first contracted cable system in the UK to utilise 525 kV HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) technology with extruded XLPE insulation. With a power transmission capacity of 2 GW, Prysmian shall design, manufacture, install, test and commission the required HVDC cable system, delivering nearly 400 km power cable needed for the 194 km route between the two countries. The majority 176 km portion of the route shall be installed offshore in the North Sea with onshore sections of around 8 km and 10 km in Scotland and England respectively.
