Offshore Wind Farms

OVERVIEW

Linking the power of nature to today’s energy demands

Abundant and inexhaustible, renewable energy resources have the potential to meet global energy needs, while reducing emissions and mitigating climate change.

Offshore wind applications are fundamental in meeting this increasing demand for greener energy. As a world leader in this area, Prysmian has a long-standing track record of offering our customers proven, cost-effective cable designs and operating systems.

Offshore Wind and Our commitment to the Energy Transition

Cables are the backbone of the power grids of the future, which are increasingly integrated, smart, and sustainable. The energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy depends on the capability to transmit and dispatch energy from sites where renewable energy is generated to places of consumption. To harness the power generated by offshore wind farms, electricity must be transmitted from the sea (where wind farms are located) to the shore (to the primary distribution grid). This requires specially-developed submarine cables, that often must be laid in water hundreds of meters deep, as well as powerful underground .

EPCI solution provider

What truly sets us apart is our capability to provide a comprehensive and fully managed EPCI service. From the design and engineering to the manufacture and full turnkey installation, encompassing the complete project management and many aspects beyond, our full value chain gives our customers a hassle-free single point of contact for all their project needs.

Through constant investment in new and upgraded manufacturing and installation assets, we offer the broadest possible range of innovative products and technologies, strengthening our services and capabilities in production and project execution for the offshore wind market.

From bottom fixed to floating offshore applications

Floating offshore wind turbines are now entering the world stage with the potential to become a relevant part of the Business because they remove the restriction of being installed in shallow waters and also have a major advantage as they are assembled in the port and then towed to the site by an ordinary tugboat, which can also tow them back to shore for heavy maintenance or final dismantling. Energy demand is growing, wind turbine generators are growing in size thanks to progress in technology and they are located further away from shore: hence the need for dynamic cables.

Dynamic cable system

Prysmian has all the in-house expertise and experience to develop a robust dynamic cable system by carefully engineering all the necessary components. Prysmian deals with dynamic cable systems during production, installation and operation. Building wind farms, both in shallow and deep water as well as other marine renewable energy systems, will require more and more dynamic cables that will have to withstand repetitive dynamic forces caused by marine waves, tides and currents.
