Health and Safety

We protect our people in the workplace. Everywhere. Worldwide.

 Prysmian operates in a complex and challenging industry, but our approach to safety is simple: safety comes first.

The commitment to ensuring the occupational health and safety of all of our employees, interns, contractors and anyone working within the organization is embodied in the “Zero & Beyond” philosophy.

Zero & Beyond

"Zero & Beyond" is Prysmian's commitment to ensuring safety in every single moment of daily life, from the workplace to the community. “Zero & Beyond” is an approach based on the belief that human life and health are indispensable values that take priority. This shared vision of our Safety Culture is supported by numerous local initiatives and breaks down into various strategies to consolidate and promote the proper conduct to ensure safety in our workplaces.

The HSE management system

The Health and Safety (H&S) Management System according to UNI ISO 45001:2018 – implemented and integrated with the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System in our plants – allows us to provide safe and healthy workplaces by preventing occupational injuries and illnesses, eliminating and/or reducing risks (including system deficiencies), and proactively improving H&S.

Consistent with the company's H&S policy we aim at:

  • continuous improvement of H&S-related performance
  • fulfillment of legal and other requirements
  • achievement of objectives for Health and Safety

Safety Strategy

We are constantly engaged in the refinement and improvement of corporate programs for the continuous development of safety culture in our organization. The group's strategy lies on four main pillars:

  • managers' leadership in safety (developed through dedicated Leadership in Health & Safety - LiHS - training programs to ensure commitment to safety issues from the top levels of the company leading by example, then pervading the entire organization);
  • strengthening the core competencies of our current HSE professionals and developing a new HR management strategy to be applied in HSE;
  • organisation and standardization of tools and procedures;
  • behaviour-based and people-based safety principles.

Our Safety Culture pursues the following objectives:

  • improve management commitment and involvement;
  • improve the multifunctional skills of HSE leaders and professionals;
  • reduce cultural differences and align practices;
  • take actions to ensure that everyone takes care of themselves and others;
  • achieve zero injuries.

Resource training

Compliance with local safety regulations is ensured at each plant through specific training paths for employees, temporary workers and contractors. Every figure working within the organization must always be aware, informed, trained and instructed about the risks and their tasks. Therefore, in addition to the topics required by applicable local laws, we provide comprehensive training programs that cover not only technical and operational topics, but also behavioral safety.

The training of temporary workers is equated with that of employees, as the staff work on the same facilities and with the same risks and responsibilities. All training activities are managed and recorded locally and reported annually at the central group level.

Measurable health and safety results

With a view to harmonization and standardization of processes, tools and procedures, we use an IT system to record and manage Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) events from any Prysmian business unit and share them with the Group. It enables the tracking and management of incidents, non-conformities, near-misses, unsafe conditions and unsafe behaviors, in addition to the tracking of Corrective, preventive and improvement Actions taken and the pooling of information with the aim of avoiding recurrence and sharing best practices. The tool also allows for graphing and statistics on key health and safety KPIs (including Frequency Rate, Severity Rate) and monitoring results and goal achievement.
