Thanks to the participation of Francesco Gori, Prysmian Chairman, we took part in the event “Green & Net Zero Talk – Interconnected Energy”, hosted by RCS Academy in collaboration with Corriere della Sera and Pianeta 2030. At the heart of the discussion: the convergence between innovation and security, the management of networks and infrastructures, and the strategic role of the energy mix for a competitive and independent development of the Italian industry.

Gori: “The acquisition of Encore Wire for $4 billion, strengthens our position in the electrification sector in the United States, remaining largely unaffected by the dynamics related to the renewable energy sources. At the same time, interconnections are playing an increasingly critical role: they allow for balancing energy transmission between countries, which is very important when using renewables, as we saw from the recent case of blackout in Spain where interconnectors could remove the risk of blackout thanks to solid connections with neighbors.”

Gori: “Europe’s future is one of interconnection, especially as electricity demand continues to grow. A great example is the connection between the UK and France where the UK sends renewable energy to France during a storm, and France can supply nuclear to the UK when needed. They bring the countries closer together and the North Sea is already forming a strong power grid, and the med has a similar important potential.”

Gori: “To remain a leader, we must keep innovating. Continuous innovation starts with materials, manufacturing processes, and cable-laying techniques. Over the past few years, we’ve invested in cable-laying vessels equipped with advanced technologies that allow operations to continue even in rough sea conditions. Innovation runs through every stage of our work, it’s a constant race. Safety is a fundamental aspect, both for power cables and for those transmitting digital signals. We integrate fiber optics into our cables, enabling us to pinpoint the exact location of any issues. We're preparing resources, vessels, and skilled people to respond in real time wherever a problem may occur.”
